How the Cute Score works
Every one of the 6,800+ places on FindCuteSpots carries a Cute Score — a 1–100 rating of how genuinely charming it is. It is computed, not assigned. No business can buy a score, submit a score, or improve one by emailing us. The only way up is to be a better place.
We score only from verifiable signals. Here is the entire formula, in public, because a ranking you can't inspect is just an opinion with a number on it.

Reputation
Your real Google rating, Bayesian-weighted against the category average. A 4.9 backed by 800 reviews counts for far more than a 5.0 backed by 12 — statistical confidence matters.

Acclaim
Log-scaled review volume. How many people cared enough to say something? A place a thousand people vouch for has proven something a hidden gem hasn’t yet.

Category charm
An editorial prior by category — bookshops and bakeries start with a structural charm advantage over, say, a sports bar. We’re a cute-spots index; we’re allowed opinions.

Local standout
How strongly a place ranks against its own town and category cohort. Being the best café in a town of 400 is an achievement the raw numbers alone can’t see.

Name charm
A small lexical signal for independent, aesthetic naming. “Pufferbellies” tells you something “Premium Coffee LLC” doesn’t.

Penalties
Chains (both a curated list and data-driven cross-city detection), strip-mall addresses, and highway locations lose points. Charm that could exist anywhere isn’t charm.
Calibration
Raw points are percentile-normalized across the full index to a 42–100 scale, so a score means the same thing in every town. Duplicate listings are unified — the same physical place always shows the same score, no matter which city page you find it on.
What a score means
90–100
National treasure
Top ~0.5% of everything we’ve indexed. There are fewer of these than there are states.
85–89
Destination-worthy
Top ~1%. Worth planning a stop around.
75–84
The good list
Genuinely charming; the backbone of every great town.
60–74
Solid
Worth a visit if you’re nearby.
42–59
Indexed
Real and open, but the data doesn’t make a case for a detour.
What we don't count
- Sponsorships or payments. There is no commercial path onto any list.
- Self-submissions. Businesses can't nominate themselves into the index.
- Our own taste in any individual case. The editorial judgment lives in the formula's weights — published above — not in per-spot overrides.
Citing our data
Journalists, bloggers, and researchers are welcome to cite Cute Scores and our rankings free of charge, with a link to findcutespots.com. Want the underlying data for a town or category — every scored spot with ratings and review counts? We'll send it over, free.
The index currently covers 111 American towns and cities. Scores recompute when our data refreshes; the current vintage is v3 (July 2026). Found something wrong — a closed business, a chain we missed? Tell us.
